Shadowrun Returns

Good, but could have been much more.

Don't expect this game to play anything like the original Shadowrun games for the SNES and Genesis. Shadowrun Returns is a completely different beast--one that still belongs in the Shadowrun franchise for sure, but it's certainly the lesser of the 3. Or 4, if you count the humdrum multiplayer FPS. The game controls well and the combat, story, and writing are engaging (at least until it goes all Starship Troopers on you), but it's far too linear and the whole experience strikes you as a fan-service game that has "potential", rather than something that's fully realized. I wanted so much more than what I got--but what I got was still pretty good.

Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut

One Star is Too Many

Good god this game is awful. If you kept a notepad beside you and jotted down all the bad ideas, in the first hour you'd have a novel. It's joyless to play, and the cinematics are so embarrassingly crude that you'll be punching yourself in the face for having paid any amount of money for this steaming pile. ----------- The graphics and sound are miserable. You will laugh at how squirrels sound like monkeys, how lakes appear to be untextured, how footsteps sound the same no matter the surface, and how characters repeat the same lines just seconds after they've spoken. -------- On top of all that, it's even worse on the PC. There are zero graphics options and a fixed resolution, the controls are horrid (even if you plug in a 360 controller), and cinematics stutter like the camera man's having a wicked seizure. ------- Dare I say it, but this is about the equivalent of "Birdemic" in the movie world. It's so bad that you might just play it for the sole purpose of witnessing how shockingly atrocious it really is. Unless you aim to write a funny negative review or Let's Play series, I'd stay far away.

Prince of Persia®: The Sands of Time

The Very Best Prince of Persia Game

Even after all these years, there's never been a better Prince of Persia game than The Sands of Time. It was pitch-perfect, with a beautifully told story, fantastic art direction, clever puzzles, masterful pacing, and satisfying, flowing platforming and combat. I had so much fun playing this game that I immediately started a new game once I beat it and played all the way through again, despite there being no New Game Plus mode or achievements to acquire. It's just that good. It feels like playing through a classic Disney film, and unlike some of its sequels it's a game that's suitable for all ages. I highly recommend this game to anyone, regardless of their genre preferences. It's just one of those games that must be played.

Deus Ex 2: Invisible War

A Good Game - Replayable

I know haters gonna hate, but I actually really enjoyed Deus Ex: IW. It has faults for sure, but I found the game overall more fun and replayable than DE1. In fact, DE2 was pretty innovative at the time with the way it handled upgrades and storytelling. Gameplay-wise, it paved the way for Bioshock. Similarities are everywhere, from the simplified upgrades (very much like plasmids) to the tighter corridors, condensed inventory, and more action-packed gameplay. Deus Ex 1 was more complex behind the hood, but the action itself wasn't the most exciting. The ragdoll physics in DE2 (which was still a new idea at the time) often made things hilarious, and really made you feel a sense of power as you grew stronger. Everything was streamlined so you could focus more on the action in front of you, and less on your inventory screen. Story-wise, I found it far more interesting than DE1. I don't often replay games, but I played through DE2 twice, because of its multiple paths. Whereas in Deus Ex 1, most of the choices you made had more to do with the gameplay than the story, in DE2 you could dramatically change the story and alter your path--and there were plenty of opportunities to do so. If you only played DE2 once, you were missing out on a lot of content.

Sacrifice

Superb, unique, beautiful.

My favorite strategy game ever made. The graphics were and STILL are beautiful, and there are so many different paths to take. The possibilities and combinations of skills/units are endless, and each one of the Gods you can follow has their own unique, expertly voiced personality and agenda. Your choosing to work with one God could upset another deity, and they might not allow you to work with them in the future. Each mission you choose gives you a new skill and new unit types. It's a compelling system that rewards experimentation and begs for multiple playthroughs. In a sea of the same old top-down Starcraft/Warcraft/C&C formulas, Sacrifice did its own thing and re-imagined the RTS genre with finesse--yet it went largely under-appreciated in comparison. There is nothing about this game that doesn't feel like a labor of love. Every self-respecting PC gamer needs to own this game. There's nothing else like it.

Severance: Blade of Darkness

Don't score based on nostalgia

Wow...let's be realistic here. This was not a great game when it was released; in fact it was quite mediocre and received some pretty poor reviews. It had fancy shadows, interesting combat, and loads of blood, but the controls were simply horrendous and the game just had a cheesy feel to it all around. I bought it as soon as it came out, but I never felt compelled to finish it. A lot of people here seem to review based on nostalgia...but this is not that great of a game, and certainly doesn't deserve 5 stars.

Blood: One Unit Whole Blood

Best 6 bucks you'll ever spend.

One of the greatest shooters I've ever played. A guilty pleasure; there's nothing else quite like it--not even Duke Nukem 3D. I absolutely loved this game, and when I re-visited it in 2009 I realized just how much was missing from modern shooters. If only Monolith would get off their F.E.A.R. kick and make a true sequel to this game, because BLOOD 2 was just awful.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption

Bloodsuckin' Good Fun

This game was flawed, yes, but still awesome. The graphics were incredible at the time (barely ran on my PC back then) and the game was fun, challenging and mature. Those who dismiss it because it isn't as good as Bloodlines are firstly comparing two completely different games, and secondly will be missing out on a unique experience, with excellent music, characters, atmosphere and progression. I highly recommend checking it out if you enjoy games of this type. Few games really explore vampirism quite as deeply as Masquerade, and that includes Bloodlines.
